Meet The Residents – Ray and Mary

Where did you move from?
We moved from a lovely part of Millwater. We had a beautiful home and wonderful neighbours but maintaining the property, gardens, lawns and hedges was becoming increasingly difficult as health concerns arose. We were becoming reliant on contractors for everything and we realised that staying where we were was only going to cost us more and more.
What do you love most about The Botanic?
The location – we regularly use the local buses across the road to get into Orewa and Ray enjoys walking to the chemist, Pak’nSave, Bunnings and wine shop. Everything is close by and so easy to access. We also love that it’s so safe for pets, and so pet-friendly. Our beloved cat Cleo has settled in beautifully.
What do you love most about your Villa at The Botanic?
The neighbours, the resident pet population and the outdoor space. The way we are able to make changes to make it just right for us – i.e.: we have turned our second bedroom into an additional lounge.
What have you learnt about retirement that you wished you’d known before?
Retirement doesn’t mean that things necessarily slow down!

How would you describe the community at The Botanic?
There’s a real sense of community here, but also the freedom to live life your own way – there’s no pressure to join in if you don’t feel like it. It didn’t take long after we moved in before everyone knew us by name – people are so friendly here. Not just residents and neighbours, but the staff too. We’ve made lots of friends – Mary loves the exercise classes – and adores the coffee dates afterwards too!
What’s the best thing about the Hibiscus Coast?
The weather! The people and wider community – and the accessibility to services here on the Coast.
What’s your advice to retirees thinking about moving to a retirement village?
Talk to people who already live here. All of the financial reasons you may be worrying about will be far outweighed by the relationships and community you gain.

What’s your favourite dish at The Clubhouse Café?
The Sweetcorn Fritters – they come on a big plate with an added slice of bacon!
What is a great quote you live by?
If I see a half-opened door, someone else may see a half-closed door. Both opinions can be right!
