It’s the big reveal! The scaffolding has officially come down on the Rimu apartments and November’s construction update showcases the detailed design of the building’s elegant exterior.
Construction is all-but complete outside, and the focus now moves to the interior where the final touches are being applied to the kitchens, walk-through wardrobes, and bathrooms, and our team is shaping The Botanic’s trademark exterior landscaping. Some of our Rimu residents will be moving in in time for Christmas!

A roof tent has been fitted on the second apartment building at The Botanic Silverdale marking a significant milestone in the retirement village’s development.
The tent fixture follows a marathon 12-hour effort in which 150m3 of concrete was poured to complete the top floor of the three-story building.

“The pour began at 4am and it finished at around 4pm,” says Jeremy Quiding, the Senior Development Manager at The Botanic Silverdale.
Construction on the Rimu apartment complex began in September last year, the second apartment complex in the village, and should be completed in 12 months. The 4,590sqm building will house 32 apartments in three, two, and one-bedroom configurations as well as underground parking.
“The roof tent really is a milestone because it signals how far we’ve come, but it also allows us to push ahead and complete the build irrespective of whatever the weather throws at us as we head into the wetter month,” says Quiding.

It’s been a busy few weeks for MAKO, The Botanic’s build partner, who also staged a mock rescue operation from the large crane tower which is stationed alongside the Rimu apartments.
MAKO collaborated with a specialist team from Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) and a local Silverdale FENZ crew to simulate a rescue option to retrieve a crane operator who had suffered a medical event.
“Central to everything we do is safety, prevention, and preparedness but if an event occurs that is out of our hands, we need to know how to respond quickly and safely to minimise the risk to life for everyone on site. It’s part of our evolving Occupational, Safety and Health plan,” says Quiding.
Emergency responders worked at speed to access the cab of the crane, and then secure and lower the operator to the ground.

“Tower cranes, by their nature, present a unique set of risks to emergency response teams. The rescue plan had to consider a number of challenges including how to create a safe landing zone for the patient, what to do if the crane had a load suspended in the air, and how to quickly position fire appliances and ambulances below,” says Quiding.
“It was an eventful day, but it also reinforced The Botanic and MAKO’s shared commitment to creating a safety-first build environment.”
To anyone not in the know, it looked like a real-life medical emergency was unfolding at The Botanic Silverdale recently, but it was an important training exercise to prepare our construction team for an on-site emergency.
Our build partner, MAKO, collaborated with a specialist team from Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) and the local Silverdale FENZ crew to simulate a rescue option to retrieve a crane operator who had suffered a medical event.

“Central to everything we do is built around safety, prevention, and preparedness but if an event occurs that is out of our hands, we need to know how to respond quickly and safely to minimise the risk to life for everyone on site. This event was an extension of our existing Occupational, Safety and Heath work which we are constantly evolving and updating,” says Jeremy Quiding, the Development Manager at The Botanic Silverdale.
The biggest challenge? How could we quickly and safely help the crane operator in such a complex situation? It was an important drill for the 12 FENZ emergency responders who worked alongside our MAKO construction team throughout the day.
Tower cranes, just by their nature, present a unique set of risks to emergency response teams. The rescue plan had to consider a number of challenges including how to create a safe landing zone for the patient, what to do if the crane had a load suspended in the air, and how to quickly position fire appliances and ambulances below.

“These are unique challenges, and they are also site-specific. The Botanic Silverdale is an evolving development so it’s an ever-changing landscape and we have to be able to respond in that environment, irrespective of the complexity of an emergency,” says Quiding.
Some of the Nikau apartment residents had a bird’s eye view from their balconies as the event unfolded on the other side of the village.
It was an eventful day, but most importantly, it reinforced The Botanic and MAKO’s shared commitment to creating a safety-first build environment. Thank you to everyone who helped us to ensure that our people always come first.
Our latest construction update flies you under the roof tent of the Rimu apartment building, and gives you a sneak peek inside some of the apartments. The tent conceals the size of MAKO’s construction team who are busy inside, and remain on-track to complete the build in December.
The update also shows the progression of the retaining working on Bronzewater Drive which is the elevated road at the rear of the village. Bronzewater will accommodate 15 duplex villas with another 15 lower-level villas accessed from Perennial Place or Sage Close.
This month’s drone update captures some of the extensive earthmoving work that is underway at the rear of the village. Our build partners, MAKO, are preparing the rear of the village for the stage of single-level duplex villas.
It also showcases the Community Gardens where everything is growing in great abundance under the care of the village’s Resident gardeners.
Spring is just around the corner, and we are eagerly anticipating the village’s magical landscaping coming to life.
This month’s drone update sweeps you across our village, and flies over the Rimu apartments with the newly fitted Roof Tent. The top-floor concrete has now been poured which is a significant milestone in our development.
Construction on the Rimu apartment complex began in September 2023 and is The Botanic Silverdale’s second apartment complex. Once completed later in 2025, the 4,590sqm building will house 32 apartments in three, two, and one-bedroom configurations as well as underground parking.
You can secure an apartment today for a fully refundable $5k deposit, and move in later in 2025.
Most retirement villages attract new residents from within a 15km radius but The Botanic Silverdale is proving so popular, enquiries are coming from retirees living beyond Auckland’s borders.
The $500m state-of-the-art retirement village has been under development on the Hibiscus Coast for almost three years and is home to many world class facilities. More than 120 residents have moved in to villas or apartments, and more retirees will shortly move in to the newly completed Nikau apartments.

“Some of our residents have secured an apartment or villa because they are easy-care and they want to head overseas or take off in their campervans. The ‘lock up and leave’ lifestyle is really appealing to so many of our residents,” says Michelle Pipping, one of the sales consultants at The Botanic.
The Clubhouse is the social heart of the resort-style village and includes a café, lounge, bar, dining space, and barbeque area. It was officially opened in October, and Silverdale locals have been regularly popping in for coffee or lunch.
The opening of The Clubhouse also coincided with the completion of many world class facilities including the Wellness Centre with an indoor 20m swimming pool, sauna, steam room, therapy pool, gym and fitness studio. All facilities are now fully open and available to The Botanic’s residents.
Pipping says The Botanic continues to attract Hibiscus Coast Residents, but they are also fielding enquiries from as far away as the Bay of Plenty, Waikato, Blenheim, the Bay of Islands, and Australia.

“What’s different about The Botanic is that we don’t tell retirees how to live, but we provide them with a beautiful environment that encourages them to live well. It’s also a coup that we are close to Auckland and have brilliant transports links and connections, but it’s only a hop, skip and a jump away from Orewa’s restaurants and beach as well.”
The Botanic will also accommodate an independent pre-school centre which will eventually cater for 100 children. It is designed to create ‘intergenerational engagement’ between elders and pre-schoolers.
Once completed, the eight-hectare site will have 84 villas and 354 apartments for independent living residents. An aged care home, and specialist memory care facilities will also follow.

Construction has begun on the second apartment building at The Botanic Silverdale with 32 one, two, and three-bedroom apartments expected to be completed in the later part of 2025.

MAKO Construction’s large hammerhead tower crane has become a familiar sight to Silverdale commuters, and is now hovering over the foundations of the new, four-story, Rimu apartment building, which mirrors the recently completed Nikau apartments.
The crane has a maximum lifting capacity of 12 tonnes, and will fulfil 95% of the lifting capability for the new apartment building.
“The peak construction months will be August through to November, and at that point we’re anticipating up to 100 contractors will be on the job every day. It’s fantastic for the development of our village, but also a boon for the local Silverdale economy too,” says Alan Edwards, a Director at The Botanic Silverdale.

“I sometimes have to remind people that you have to be 65 to move into The Botanic. I’ve had the occasional person in their fifties ask if they can move in!”
On the northern side of the site, more than 100 tonnes of concrete has been poured into the piles and foundations of a large retaining wall which stabilises the site, and ensures construction doesn’t impact a natural creek below the development.
“If you walk through our village you’ll notice our homes, the pathways and our beautiful landscaping, but behind it all is a remarkable feat of modern engineering,” says Edwards.
The Botanic Silverdale is home to more than 150 residents, and the village is expected to grow beyond 200 retirees in the second half of 2025, following the completion of the Nikau apartments.
“Interest has been strong. We’ve sold more than a third of the apartments off-the-plans already,” says Michelle Pipping, a Millwater resident, and a member of The Botanic’s sales team.

The recently opened Clubhouse Café is proving popular with Silverdale residents. Pipping says it’s bringing more footfall to the village, and locals are developing a greater understanding of resort-style retirement living.

Once completed, the eight-hectare site will have 84 villas and 354 apartments for independent living residents. An aged care home, and specialist memory care facilities will eventually complete the full suite of retirement care options.
Every month we film our progress at The Botanic Silverdale.
Our June update shows the development and landscaping of our Community Gardens, and the 24 raised beds which are shaped into a gentle arch to mimic a silver fern frond.
Our gardens are a resident-led project, and are already producing fresh vegetables for our retirees every week.
